The names, Social Security numbers and birth dates of up to 26.5 million veterans have been stolen according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

The information was stolen after a Veterans Affairs employee took the information home without being authorized to do so, and his home was burglarized along with the info. The employee has not been named, but has been placed on leave.

The data stolen is that of Veterans who have separated from the military since 1975 as well as possibly some who separated before that, but submitted a claim for VA benefits. In some cases information of spouses may have also been compromised.

VA Secretary R. James Nicholson says that there is no indication so far that the info is being used fraudulently.
