A massive Chinook troop transport helicopter crashed in Afghanistan during anti-guerilla operations. The fate of those aboard remains unknown. The makes the second CH-47 to go down since April.
The Chinook went down near the Pakistani border in the province of Kunar and west of Asadabad. The military spokesperson could provide few details but said she would provide more as the became available.
This marks one of several helicopter crashes since the U.S. ousted the Taliban-run government of Afghanistan back in 2001. The Taliban have increased their attacks in recent weeks though against the mostly U.S. force of 20,000 troops. The increased activity is believed to stem from parliamentary elections slated for September.
Interestingly enough, two Chinooks were shot by rocket-propelled grenades last week but both returned back to base without casualties. The big Chinook has a 54-person capacity with a crew of four.
The first Chinook to go down this year, back in April crashed in a sandstorm. The crash killed 18 making it the biggest single casualty hit during the Afghanistan conflict. A BBC correspondent based in Kabul said this crash look to be much worse.
