At least 15 people died and 100 were wounded as the result of an explosion in Kashmir. The explosion came from a bomb that was hidden in a pickup truck.
Among those who lost their lives, were eleven civilians, three paramilitary soldiers, and the person who is suspected of being the attacker. Police discovered an AK-47 rifle in the truck with the attacker.
Police said that 88 pounds of explosives were hidden in the truck, which carried construction materials for the building of a perimeter wall around the area. AFX News Limited reports:
The blast -- blamed by the army on Islamic militants -- shook the town of Pulwama, 30 km south of the Indian Kashmir summer capital Srinagar, at around 11.00 am (0530 GMT) when the area was crowded with civilians.
However, none of the one dozen militant groups active in Indian Kashmir have claimed responsibility for the explosion, which has been condemned by the region's main militant alliance, the United Jihad Council.
"It is a clear act by Indian agencies to create a wedge between mujahedin (holy warriors) and the general masses," said a statement from the council in Srinagar.
Chaos ensued in the streets after the blast. Residents ran into the streets furious at the lack of speed in which rescue efforts were made. Four people were injured while fighting with police.
The explosion occurred near a school, a post office, and a security forces' camp. At least eight of the people who were injured are said to be in critical condition.
