About a month ago, an Italian woman that worked for CARE, an international relief agency, was pulled out of her car and kidnaped by four armed men in Afghanistan's capital, Kabul.
Clementina Cantoni was working with widows in Kabul. She was dragged out of her car and into a white Toyota after the car she was in dropped off another CARE worker.
Ms. Cantoni, who is 32 years old, has now been released, and is safe. according to Interior Ministry spokesman Latfullah Mashal. "Yes she has been released. She is at the Ministry of Interior. She has spoken with her mother by phone," he said. BBC News reports:
She has been in Afghanistan since September 2003, supporting more than 10,000 widows and their children.
Hours before her release was announced, hundreds of schoolgirls in the Afghan capital, Kabul, handed out nearly 3,000 stickers calling for Ms Cantoni to be freed.
Days after she was kidnapped, the kidnappers broadcasted a video of Cantoni sitting on the floor in a blanket with two men with guns pointed at her head.
Last October, three UN election workers were kidnapped at gunpoint in Kabul, but a month later, they were released unharmed. Another CARE worker was kidnapped also in October in Baghdad, and was allegedly killed, though no body was ever found.
