After being hospitalized for medical tests to be run, Saudi Arabia's King Fahd is in stable condition. The King had a treatment to have fluid drained from his lungs according to an official.
"Thank God, his condition is stable and the doctors are reassuring about the subject. We all pray for his speedy recovery, God willing." said Prince Saud al-Faisal.
King Fahd in his early 80s and suffered a stroke back in 1995. Since his hospitalization, the palace made a royal statement, which asked Saudis to pray for the King's recovery.
"I'm asking God to protect King Fahd for us and his family," said a 39-year-old Saudi businessman."The stability of the kingdom comes with his name." According to Laith Abou-Ragheb of Reuters,
Should Fahd die, diplomats expect a smooth succession in the kingdom, the world's biggest oil exporter, which has been fighting al-Qaida militants trying to topple the royal family.
The script calls for Crown Prince Abdullah, the king's half-brother and a cautious reformist, to ascend the throne and for Defense Minister Prince Sultan to become crown prince.
There appears to be worrisome mood throughout the country as its citizens fear the worst may happen to their King. He is obviously well respected.
"I think the fact the government so quickly told us about the king's condition means things are very serious this time," said a 24-year-old university student.
Some believe that the King may already be dead, and that the government is keeping the information private until it feels the time is right to disclose it.
