Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TENN) couldn't keep it together for the vote on Bush's nominee for the U.N. on Thursday. Democrats demanded additional documents from the White House involving Bolton and Frist couldn't get the 60 needed to shut down debate on the issue. The Senate postponed the vote until June 6th, after their upcoming recess.

Things haven't gone so well for Frist this week after he didn't get the filibuster versus judicial nominees ruled out and now he get's slapped down again with some people having left early and others changing their mind.

Bolton Vote Lasts A Little Longer
The Bolton debate has been stack with controversy from early on. Reports surfaced during Foreign Relations committee meetings on Bolton of his abuse of subordinates and mishandling of documents regarding intelligence. Senator Joe Biden (D-Delaware), the ranking Democrat on the committee led the fight on this and continues to demand the documents. At one point Frist even requested the documents and the White House denied his request.

The White House does have another option though and that would be a recess appointment. All the presidents have gone with this option at one point or another and Bush may not be an exception. If Bush goes through with this option, then Bolton would be the chief ambassador to the United Nations for one year. Many critics feel this is a bad idea as Bolton has been an outspoken critic of the international entity.

Next on the agenda for Senator Frist is the stem cell funding bill. The House passed it pretty handily and now it moves to the Senate. President Bush promised to put the smack down on stem cell research and veto the bill but it's not certain whether the full congress can muster the 2/3rds needed in each chamber to override the president's veto.
