An Italian woman that works for CARE, an international relief agency, was pulled out of her car and kidnaped by four armed men in Afghanistan's capital, Kabul.
The woman was reportedly dragged out of her car and into a white Toyota sedan. The woman's name is Clementina Cantoni and she is from Milan. She was working with widows in Kabul.
CARE's director in Afghanistan, Paul Barker said, "Four men carrying Kalashnikovs bashed in the window of her car and took her away. They told the driver not to move or he would be shot."
The kidnapping occurred right after the car she was in dropped off another female employee. Barker says that the kidnappers did not make any demands for her release. According to News24.com,
In downtown Kabul, police were stopping almost every car passing major junctions, checking the trunks and under the seats. Patrol cars with flashing emergency lights were moving slowly through the side streets.
There were no signs of activity at the Care office, which is located in the district, and vendors said they had seen no sign of an incident.
In October, three UN election workers were kidnapped at gunpoint in Kabul, but a month later, they were released unharmed. Another CARE worker was kidnapped also in October in Baghdad, and was allegedly killed, though no body was ever found.
We can only hope that Cantoni's fate resembles those of the three UN election workers and not that of fellow CARE worker Margaret Hassan who was 59 years old.
