Nobel Peace Prize winner David Trimble has stepped down as the leader of the Ulster Unionist Party after losing his seat in the British parliament.
David Simpson won Trimble's seat by over 5,000 votes.
News24.com says:
The move comes barely 48 hours after David Simpson of the hardline Protestant Democratic Unionist Party ousted Trimble from his central Upper Bann constituency, making the largest casualty of Thursday's general election.
The defeat marked not only a personal blow for Trimble, 60, but also for the UUP which for 80 years was the dominant political force in the British-ruled province.
"At a private meeting with the President and Chairman of the Ulster Unionist Party this morning I indicated to them that I do not wish to continue as leader," stated Trimble.
The Ulster Unionist Council lost 4 seats in parliament. Trimble blamed the republican movement and British government for the Ulster Unionist Council's position.
A special meeting is being organized for the Ulster Unionist Council to elect a new leader.
