Two American soldiers are being detained by Columbia police on allegations of plotting to traffic ammunition to paramilitary forces.
Led by an informant, authorities raided a condominium in the town of Carme de Apicala, 56 miles southwest of Bogota, to find 32,900 rounds of ammunition.
"It's a huge amount of munitions," said National Police Chief Jorge Daniel Castro. He then noted that the soldiers "did not give a satisfactory explanation.
A Columbian Army sergeant was also arrested, thought to be the broker for the munitions.
It is said that temptation is high to engage in smuggling arms and drugs for easy money.
On March 29, after 35 pounds of cocaine were found aboard a US military plane en route to El Paso, TX, authorities arrested five soldiers.
In 2000, the wife of an Army colonel was sentenced to a five-year prison term for attempting to traffic heroin into the US.
