With the aid of US intelligence, Pakistani security forces have arrested the successor of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (KSM), third in command for Al-Qaida.
An easily identifiable man, Abu Faraj al-Liby, aka "Dr. Taufeek," is less familiar with western culture than his masterminded predecessors, a trait, US officials say, typical to the new brand of Al-Qaida leaders.
Though he was more low-key than KSM, his physical characteristics kept him from blending in with the crowd. Libyan born Al-Liby has a skin condition known as vitiglio, the same condition allegedly afflicting Michael Jackson.
Pakistan had a vested interest in Al-Liby's capture as he is thought to be behind two assassination attempts on Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf.
According to a US official, After KSM disappeared from the scene, Faraj took on some of his leadership responsibilities and was instrumental in directing al Qaeda operations globally, including attacks against the homeland."
Intelligence officers went on to say that Al-Liby was being interrogated and that they are trying to locate his contacts to make further arrests.
