On the heels of new missile tests by North Korea, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice warned informed Pyongyang the U.S. could defend itself and its allies against nuclear and missile threats
"I don't think there should be any doubt about our ability to deter whatever the North Koreans are up to," Rice said. "This is not just between the United States and North Korea."
All this comes after a warning last week from Defense Intelligence Agency chief Vice Adm. Lowell E. Jacoby said North Korea could strike U.S. territory with nuclear missiles. The N. Korean/U.S. nuclear weapons talks remain at a standstill.
While South Korea and Japan downplayed the missile test as a short range missile and said this was really nothing and that the missile couldn't reach Japan, Japan stressed the need to reopen the six-part negotiations.
In reality this story seems more like "The Mouse that Roared". Assuming the six-member negotiations resume, Kim Jong Il will get his nation built for free. After decades of reports of a poor, impoverished population, the great powers of the world will provide security and economic assistance to the hardline Stalinist. He's really working this show for all its worth. The problem comes from calling his bluff. You call Pyongyang on it and then he really does have nukes and he uses them on say Japan or South Korea. Then things get really ugly. I wonder if the CIA has any spare hitmen.
