President Bush will show off five new points of his ongoing energy policy today. These include several measure including burning cleaner, more efficient coal and turning defunct military bases into oil refineries.
In the wake of energy problems, particularly with rising fuel costs for crude oil, gasoline, and heating oil, the president has suggested five points to help bring these costs under control in the long term.
One thing Bush plans is an increase in nuclear power plants around the country. Bush wants federal risk insurance to protect some of the companies who might consider building new nuclear facilities in the United States.
Bush also wants to develop technologies for cleaner burning coal facilities around the country. He also wants to see more liquefied natural gas locations. The liquefied fuel is much smaller than its gas equivalents. Bush wants to increase from the existing four locations to 32 new terminals
Next, he will create a program that encourages development of alternative fuel sources as well as hybrid engines and fuel cells to power automobiles.
He would like to turn old military bases into oil refineries and set up a system of tax breaks and incentives to get companies to begin building more refineries.
All this come from the last year of record highs on oil and gas prices with crude hitting over $58 a barrel earlier this month and gasoline averaging better than $2.20 a gallon.
