The trial of 24 al Qaeda suspects began in Spain yesterday. The suspects include three people who have been accused of being involved with the 9/11 attacks.

Security was beefed up for the trial by Spanish authorities.

According to an Associated Press article,

"The proceedings were Europe's biggest trial of al Qaeda suspects. Spain is the second country, after Germany, to try suspects in the 9-11 attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people. The only man charged in the United States, Zacarias Moussaoui, pleaded guilty Friday to helping al Qaeda carry out the attacks.

In a sometimes feisty appearance, the lone native-born Spaniard among the 24 Muslim defendants said he neither supported nor rejected al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden but insisted that he himself rejected all forms of terrorism."

Lawyers said they may seek testimony from terrorism suspects that are in U.S. custody.
