Zacarias Moussaoui plans to plead guilty to terrorist charges today even though it could mean his life. Moussaoui was charged with conspiracy involvement in the 9/11 attacks.
The plea to a six-count indictment, including conspiracy to commit acts of terrorism, commit aircraft piracy, destroy aircraft, murder government employees and destroy property will stop a trial bring the horrors of the Al-Quaeda terrorist network into focus. He could receive the death penalty for four of the six indictments.
The Moroccan-descended Frenchman has played several games with the courts so far although experts scratch their head on this decision, which would seem certain to end his life.
Moussaoui has tried to sue for $20 million abuse he claimed he received while being interred in Virginia. The second time involved his delinquency when being taken to a courthouse for a deposition.
He was originally picked up immigration violations and then after 9/11 was considered a terrorist. Khalid Shaihk Mohammed has implicated Moussaoui saying he was considered as a replacement pilot for 9/11 but that changed and he was going to be used in another attack planned for a later date.
The fact the Moussaoui wasn't pegged before the attacks has become an issue as well.
"Moussaoui was a missed opportunity for the United States," Tim Roemer, a member of the Sept. 11 commission, said Friday on NBC's "Today" show. Roemer said better communication by various agencies about Moussaoui "might have unveiled parts of this plot" before the attacks.
And there's the possibility he could still change his mind, which he's done before.
