Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi made an apology for the damage that Japan caused in World War II.
Koizumi delivered the apology in a speech to leaders at the Asia-Africa summit yesterday.
"In the past Japan through its colonial rule and aggression caused tremendous damage and suffering for the people of many countries, particularly those of Asian nations," said Koizumi.
"Japan squarely faces these facts of history in a spirit of humility," he added also saying that Japan's people feel "deep remorse and heartfelt apology".
According to a Stuff.co.nz article,
"Thousands have demonstrated in cities across China the past three weekends in violent protests against Japanese textbooks that critics say whitewashes its wartime history and Tokyo's campaign for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.
Both sides have, however, been making some soothing noises in an effort to keep relations from unravelling and damaging economic ties worth $212 billion (111 billion pounds) in annual trade."
While Koizumi made his speech, Japanese lawmakers visited the Yasukuni Shrine which honors executed World War II war criminals.
