The Vatican said today that Pope John Paul is slipping in and out of conciousness.
The Pope's health took a drastic turn for the worse this week and he is apparently not able to stay awake.
"This absolutely does not mean he is in a coma," said spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls. The Pope's "eyes are open and he remains conscious, but at times he seems to be sleeping."
A Bloomberg article says:
"The 84-year-old pope is not in a coma, Navarro-Valls told reporters at 11:30 a.m. in Rome. He said he may give another briefing at 5:30 p.m. By the pope's bedside are his personal secretaries, Stanislao Dziwisz and Monsignor Mieczyslaw Mokrzycki, both from his native Poland.
The pontiff, who asked not be taken back to hospital, yesterday received the blessing for the dying after suffering heart failure and running up a high fever. Tens of thousands of people are gathering in St. Peters Square to pay their last respects and gaze up at the windows of the pope's apartment."
"He's walked with us and grown with us in faith," said Robert Menner, a U.S. priest from St. Louis holding vigil outside St. Peter's. "We are watching his window and witnessing a close member of the family who is being called to the Lord."
