Officials from the US have banned the Sinn Fein party from fund-raising during their Saint Patrick's Day visit to the US.

Diplomatic sources have reported that Sinn Fein, the political wing of the outlawed IRA group was warned by State Department officials that any attempt to raise money among Irish-American supporters would be "unacceptable".

President Bush has refused to meet with Sinn Fein party leader Gerry Adams. However he will meet with the sisters of Robert McCartney, a Catholic civilian who was slain outside a bar in Belfast. His murder has been linked to the IRA.

Senator Ted Kennedy, an Irish-American from Massachusetts, has also called off a meeting with the Sinn Fein leader.
