Spain honored the first anniversary of the Madrid train bombings and paid tribute to the 191 people who died from al-Qaeda's attack.
Last year, 10 bombs exploded on four commuter trains in Madrid during the morning rush hour.
According to a New York Times article,
"Visitors to the Atocha train station, where one of the trains was bombed, stopped and bowed their heads in silence. Many brought red candles and flowers and placed them near the station entrance.
At noon, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia led the nation in observing five minutes' silence at the new March 11 memorial known as the "Forest of the Absent," a collection of 192 olive and cypress trees representing each of the victims who died and a police officer killed a few weeks later while trying to arrest some of the suspects."
"This is a very private day for those of us who lost someone," said Carmen Hernandez who lost a daughter in the attacks.
Security was tight in Madrid including police helicopters and patrolling officers on horseback.
