Lebanese President Emile Lahoud today reappointed Omar Karami as Prime Minister, just two weeks after he resigned the post following massive protests.
The protests began after the assassination on February 14 of former prime minister Rafiq Hariri, in a Beirut car bomb widely blamed on Syrian agents.
Karami, commented his new mission was to form a national unity government to save Lebanon from destruction.
Karami said on Thursday, "The only way to confront all the difficulties facing the nation is a government of national unity, If there is any procrastination in responding to this invitation, it means we're heading to destruction."
A opposition MP loyal to assassinated former Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri said her bloc would not take part in any such government. Ghenwa Jalloul told Reuters, "We will not take part in any government before our demands are met," .
Jack Straw, the Foreign Secretay for Britian quickly expressed his concern, hoping that this is only a temporary move.
"I am very unhappy about the news that President Lahoud asked Prime Minister Karami to appoint the same government. I very much hope that this is an interim government," Mr Straw commented to a meeting in London of the left-wing Fabian Society.
