Washington State's Mount St. Helens erupted and spewed steam and ash nearly 36,000 feet into the air on Tuesday in its first eruption since waking up from an 18-year old sleep last October.
People as faw away in Portland, Oregon, some 60 miles away, could see the plume, which followed an eruption at 5:25 p.m. PT. The explosion lasted approximately 30 minutes.
Scientists were flying over the crater of Mount St. Helens today to try and locate the origins of a plume of ash and steam.
They said the explosion is not necessarily a indicator of a larger or more destructive eruption to come. Scientists have said Tuesday's event was to be expected, given the volcano's history.
The volcano's recent activity is far weaker than the cataclysmic explosion that occurred on May 18, 1980, and claimed 57 lives.
