The U. S. must take responsibility for the "friendly fire" killing of an Italian intelligence agent in Iraq in order to put the incident behind the two allies, the Italian prime minister commented on Wednesday.
The Italian leader has accepted an offer from the United States to hold a joint investigation of last Friday's shooting outside the Baghdad airport.
Differing statements have emerged about Friday's shooting at a checkpoint on the road to the Baghdad airport, in which agent Calipari was shot and killed and hostage Sgrena was wounded in the shoulder.
The U.S. military has said the car the two were in rapidly approached a checkpoint and ignored repeated warnings to stop, while Berlusconi going by what he was told, told Italy's Senate that the car carrying agent Nicola Calipari and hostage Giuliana Sgrena stopped immediately when a light was flashed.
Mr. Berlusconi commented the idea that Mr. Calipari had been killed by friendly fire was "painful" but added he was certain the US "has no intention of evading the truth".
Brig. General Peter Vangjel has been named to head the follow-up probe. The investigation is expected to two to four weeks.
