Rescuers have rescued 14 South African miners trapped in collapsed shafts on Wednesday after an earthquake hit a gold mining area, there was no immediate word on the fate of another 28 miners who had been trapped underground.

"They are still digging through the caved in tunnels that lead to the areas where we believe the miners are trapped," said DRDGold spokesman Ilja Graulich.

The earthquake, described by local seismologists as "very exceptional" for the area, measured 5.0 on the Richter scale and could be felt in Johannesburg.

Police commented another 38 people in the town of Klerksdorp suffered minor injuries. Several buildings were damaged in the area.

Naturally occurring earthquakes are rare in South Africa. The last major one, which occurred in 1969 north of Cape Town, measured 6.3 on the Richter scale.
