U.S. Army General George Casey, who is commanding U.S. forces in Iraq commented that he wasn't notified that Italy had told the United States that the Italian reporter was freed.
The General stated, "I personally do not have any indication of that, even on a preliminary basis."
Italy's foreign minister said late Tuesday that the car carrying an intelligence officer who was killed by U.S. fire in Iraq hadn't been speeding and received no warnings to stop.
US Army Brig. General Peter will lead a Multinational Corps Iraq team to investigate the March 4 incident on a Baghdad road that left Italian security specialist Nicola Calipari dead and Italian journalist Guiliana Sgrena wounded.
Foreign Minister Gianfranco Fini also stated, "It was certainly an accident, an accident caused by a series of circumstances and coincidences." He added, "But this doesn't mean, in fact it makes it necessary, to demand that events are clarified, to identify those responsible, and if people are to blame then to request and obtain that the guilty parties are punished."
