President Bush demanded that Syria pull its troops out of Lebanon and allow free elections. He is quoted as saying ... All Syrian military forces and intelligence personnel must withdraw before the Lebanese elections for these elections to be free and fair.
"The Lebanese people have the right to determine their future free from domination by a foreign power. The Lebanese people have the right to choose their own parliament this spring free of intimidation," Bush said.
Syria has commented that it plans to redeploy its troops within Lebanon for the time being.
On Monday the White House called the Syrian announcement to redeploy troops to the Bekaa Valley and then to the Syrian-Lebanese border as a "half measure" that is unacceptable.
Bush commented that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is facing the choice of either ending Syria's occupation of Lebanon or becoming even more isolated in the world community. It is a choice that Mr. Bush says is not only being presented by the United States, but by Russia, France, Germany, and Saudi Arabia as well.
