John Bolton will take over as US ambassador to the United Nations from Senator John Danforth, who resigned in December, assuming he is approved.
John Bolton's nomination for the US ambassador to the United Nations is raising a lot of eyebrows and questions at a time when it was thought the administration was out to set a more diplomatic tone.
Michael Doyle, a professor of law and international affairs at Columbia University in New York is quoted as saying...If he's being sent to New York to throw rocks, it won't do a lot of good, On the other hand, if he's being sent to provide leadership for reform, that's a different story. He's the kind of person who could bring on board many skeptics in the Congress.
Few governments spoke publicly regarding the president's pick. But many in foreign policy circles were wary of Bolton, seeing him as a staunch unilateralist indifferent to allies' views.
In Europe, Francois Heisbourg, director of the Paris-based Foundation for Strategic Research think-tank commented, "this is really going to reopen all of the worst suspicions about the Bush administration's refusal to engage in effective multilateralism."
Others said the nomination, showed Bush's seriousness about pushing for change at the United Nations.
