According to Russian President Vladimir Putin's Web site, Chechen separatist leader Aslan Maskhadov was killed in an assault by Russian security forces today.

The head of Russia's Federal Security Service Nikolai Patrushev, commented to Putin that Maskhadov was killed in a military operation in the Chechen village of Tolstoi-Yurt.

There have also been reports by Interfax, citing Chechnya's Kremlin-backed deputy prime minister, Ramzan Kadyrov that Russian forces intended to take Maskhadov alive, but he was killed by careless weapons-handling by his bodyguards.

Last year, Russia's Federal Security Service offered a $10 million reward for information leading to the capture or death of Mr. Maskhadov.

Mr. Maskhadov was elected president of Chechnya in 1997. He went into hiding in 1999 when Russia's then-prime minister Vladimir Putin sent thousands of troops back into Chechnya to reassert control over the republic.
