The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFAT) and Trade for New Zealand issued an advisory for tourists to avoid Nepal because of a state of emergency that was recently declared there.

According to Stuff.co.nz, the state of emergency was issued when King Gyanendra of Nepal dismissed the Nepalese government. MFAT also warned that Nepal's international airport was closed and communication networks throughout the country have been shutdown.

The warning, which was posted on the Ministry's website also says, "Until the situation becomes clearer we advise New Zealanders to exercise particular caution and vigilance." Stuff also reports:

The unsettled political situation meant protest action and demonstrations were occurring with increasing regularity, particularly in Kathmandu.

The tourism industry had been targeted with attacks on hotels, and many trekking routes had been seriously affected by Maoist insurgency, the MFAT statement said.
