Today, Condoleezza Rice pledged to work on ties that have been frayed by the war in Iraq.
Rice, at her confirmation hearing, told senators that "the time for diplomacy is now". She is replacing secretary of state Colin Powell.

"If confirmed, I will work with members of Congress, from both sides of the aisle, to build a strong bipartisan consensus behind America's foreign policy."
Senate confirmation of Rice, 50, was all but assured. But she faced tough questions from committee Democrats on her role in U.S. foreign policy as President Bush's national security adviser.
"Our first challenge…is to inspire the American people and the people of all free nations to unite in common cause to solve common problems," Rice said."
If confirmed, she will have a some big shoes to fill...
