The US has abandoned its search for Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, ending their search for the arms stockpile that was the key justification for going to war.
According to an article at News.com.au…
"The failure to find WMD in Iraq is a major embarrassment to the US, Britain, and Australia, whose argument for removing Saddam was based on intelligence which they said, indicated strongly the dictator had ongoing illegal weapons programs.
All three governments have now admitted the intelligence appears to have been wrong.
"I felt like we would find weapons of mass destruction ... like many - many here in the United States, many around the world," US President George W. Bush told ABC's Barbara Walters, according to excerpts from an interview airing later this week.
Mr Bush said: "we need to find out what went wrong in the intelligence gathering," and that the invasion was "absolutely" worth it even if there were no weapons of mass destruction.
"You can only search so many places for WMD," said a US defence official, who added that the ISG was continuing to review documents and interview people knowledgeable about deposed President Saddam Hussein's arms programs for possible leads."
House of Representatives Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi of California said: "Now that the search is finished, President Bush needs to explain to the American people why he was so wrong, for so long, about the reasons for war."
