U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell flew over the devastation from Asia's tsunami and commented that "it was more horrifying than wars he had witnessed".
"I cannot begin to imagine the horror that went through the families and all of the people who heard this noise coming and then had their lives snuffed out by this wave," Mr. Powell told reporters after the short flight.
"The power of the wave to destroy bridges, to destroy factories, to destroy homes, to destroy crops, to destroy everything in its path is amazing. And to consider that we only did a brief tour around Banda Aceh, but to know that you will see the same thing if you flew 100 miles along the coastline going south, or if you went to the east side and flew along the coastline you would see the same things."
Powell continued, "I have never seen anything like it in my experience. I have been in war and I have been through a number of hurricanes, tornadoes and other relief operations, but I have never seen anything like this."
After his visit, Powell, left for Jakarta to meet with world leaders at a global relief summit.
One blogger was a little suspicious, "Someone tell me why Jeb Bush went with Colin Powell to tour regions affected by the tsunami. Why him and not some other governor or senator or aid worker or anybody? OK, yeah, Florida deals with hurricanes... that state has a lot of shoreline... but somehow I can't help feeling that's not why.
Yeah, I'm a pretty suspicious type these days. (I can hear a few of you wise crackers saying, "Yeah, you sure are.")"
