Cisco Web Site Attacked And Cracked

A report on Silicon.com today claims the Cisco web site was compromised, requiring users to change their passwords.
The report says users of the Cisco web site, where items like support documents and other information on Cisco products can be obtained, may have been cracked:
In a press statement, Cisco said: "It has been brought to our attention that there is an issue in a Cisco.com search tool that could expose passwords for registered users.
"As a result, to protect our registered Cisco.com users, we're taking the proactive step of resetting Cisco.com passwords. Needless to say we're investigating the incident which does not appear to be due to a weakness in our security products and technologies or with our network infrastructure."
Web page defacements and other problems happen from time to time, so Cisco's contention that the intrusion was not related to its networking products seems reasonable.
Cisco's web site may be gaining a little extra malicious attention in the wake of the company's silencing of a presentation on problems with its IOS software. Cisco and ISS, who employed security researcher Michael Lynn, sued to keep Mr. Lynn from discussing the problem at the Black Hat conference.
In turn, he left his job with ISS and gave the presentation anyway, citing a public need to know as the reason.
