McAfee Acquires Wi-Fi Security Firm

The purchase of privately-held Wireless Security Corp. will give McAfee a Wi-Fi security component for its products.
Wi-Fi networks can present a whole new range of security problems if not secured properly. Those problems can range from use of a network by unauthorized persons to outright attacks against resources on a network.
As home and business users implement Wi-Fi more broadly, the need to enhance security exists. McAfee already offers a range of antivirus and security products. The company's acquisition of Wireless Security Corp gives McAfee a Wi-Fi security solution too.
The Wireless Security Corp offering combines encryption, authentication, and intrusion detection processes. Their technology will support virtually all network cards, and routers from Linksys, Netgear, and D-Link.
According to industry analyst firm IDC, the worldwide adoption of wireless access points will grow at a 36% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over the next four years. Factors contributing to this growth include more homes with multiple computers, increased broadband penetration, and a greater choice of laptops over standard desktops.
McAfee expects to have the product ready for a fall launch in the consumer market. A version integrated with the company's managed VirusScan solution for small businesses is also in development.
