Social media may hold something more than Star Wars kids or weeping Britney fans; it could be key to tracking down terrorism.
Programmers should not get the Open Source Center operated by the federal government confused with a Linux or Apache initiative. The only Apaches that site might think about would be the heavily armed choppers the Army uses.
They also think about finding websites and other digital information online that may lead them to the next potential terrorist attack. Secrecy News cited Doug Naquin, director of the Center, on the interest the intelligence community has in social media:
"We're looking now at YouTube, which carries some unique and honest-to-goodness intelligence," he said.
"We have groups looking at what they call 'Citizens Media': people taking pictures with their cell phones and posting them on the Internet. Then there's Social Media, phenomena like MySpace and blogs.... A couple years back we identified Iranian blogs as a phenomenon worthy of more attention, about six months ahead of anybody else."
Yes, the people who want you murdered in any way possible for being American use a US-made video sharing service to get the message out to others. If something is online, chances are the CIA's Center, a replacement for the old Foreign Broadcast Information Service, has sifted through the content already.
