Roger Thompson's company, featuring the LinkScanner search results inspector, has been purchased by AVG's owner, Grisoft.
A statement about the acquisition said Thompson will take the role of chief research officer for the combined companies.
Grisoft distributes the AVG antivirus package, and other security software. The free edition of their AV software has been available for several years, and Grisoft also distributes a free anti-rootkit package.
Exploit Labs said the deal will enable them to grow their research operation. That will be important as they continue to improve LinkScanner and its ability to warn people of potentially dangerous links.
"The acquisition will allow Grisoft to leapfrog the safe surfing initiatives of other anti-virus vendors, who have focused on database-driven approaches that are incompatible with the dynamic, elusive nature of these threats." Grisoft said of the purchase.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
