Police hauled off Dan Egerstad for questioning over his publishing of email account information belonging to government entities.
Egerstad accessed 1,000 email accounts and could see all kinds of information, like diplomatic memos and other sensitive correspondence. He accomplished this in August 2007 using Tor, which he installed on five machines in datacenters and watched the traffic.
His curiosity caught up with him when authorities seized him and some of his personal property, the Sydney Morning Herald reported. The 22-year-old wasn't too scared of his captors:
While questioning Egerstad at the station, the police "played every trick in the book, good cop, bad cop and crazy mysterious guy in the corner not wanting to tell his name and just staring at me".
"Well, if they want to try to manipulate, I can play that game too. [I] gave every known body signal there is telling of lies ... covered my mouth, scratched my elbow, looked away and so on."
Egerstad was released after a couple of hours serving at the convenience of law enforcement. He has claimed the information he found, and tried to inform relevant governments about, likely had been available to other hackers long before he saw it.
