The kerfuffle that erupted when the General Services Administration evaporated California's ca.gov domain still hasn't yielded a full cleaning of that domain's websites.
After noting the federal government's mistaken approach to thwarting a hacked server on the ca.gov domain, we found out some other news of interest.
Alex Eckelberry of Sunbelt Software contacted us after our piece on the story appeared. It turns out researchers at Sunbelt discovered the mess at the Marin County websites, where hackers broke in to a server.
That's not all, Eckelberry said, and passed along a URL for the Madera Courts website that contains Viagra advertising. As of the writing of this story a day later, that page is still live on the domain.
Similar injection attacks have happened at other sites. Locally for us, the University of Kentucky was embarrassed over the summer to find a similar Viagra spam page on its servers.
Communication, rather than blowing away domain records, will go a long way toward helping administrators correct these issues when they happen. People have email, voicemail, IM, not to mention VoIP and services like GrandCentral that will ring a bunch of phone numbers when called.
There's no reason anyone has to be in the dark when a problem has been noticed on their administered sites.
