Criminals using PDFs as a way to slip spam and Trojans to email recipients may be backing off their once-heavy usage of the PDF to do so.
Either the spammers are taking a break, or they have abandoned PDF spam as an attack vector.
Sophos said in its security blog that PDF spam has fallen from a massive surge to virtually nil.
"Over approximately the past 2 months, PDF spam has exploded from a little used technique to making up close to 30% of all spam being sent during its peak (averaged daily)," said Sophos.
"Due to spammers adjusting their campaigns, the volume of these messages has fluctuated, however over the past week PDF spam has all but dried up."
The reason for that could be the shift in promoting the Storm worm through a series of YouTube spams hitting email boxes. Links to the Storm Trojan have been spotted associated with links to purportedly naughty videos on YouTube.
