A new greeting card spam hitting people using Microsoft's MSN Messenger will drop a Trojan with similar characteristics to a notorious family of bank credential stealing Trojans.

Not all Brazilians are beautiful. Some have criminal minds and show it with the malware they create. Such gangs do run in Brazil as they do elsewhere, and look for opportunities to exploit others when possible.

Symantec's Liam OMurchu found a number of similarities between the new Trojan that affects MSN Messenger, and the long-standing Infostealer.Bancos Trojans.

"It certainly would not be surprising to discover that both were written by the very same gang, and that the gang are expanding their operation to target more than just banking sites," he wrote.

Both the new and the old Trojans arrive with .scr extensions, collect email addresses, and send them to anonymous email accounts. In OMurchu's example, the new Trojan sends them to a couple of Gmail addresses, both of which have been reported to the relevant abuse team at Google.

Couple that with their focus on Brazilians, and the programming being done in Delphi, and OMurchu thinks it's pretty likely the Bancos thieves are branching out to other fields.
