Credit card numbers and other personal information made their way to undercover investigators from an order processing subcontractor for the Disney Movie Club.
Disney and the company in question, Alta Resources in Wisconsin, probably wanted to keep news of data theft by an Alta employee under wraps. But a recipient of an advisory letter about the incident, Brad Van Duser, promptly passed it along to the media.
The letter ended up at Computerworld, which reported the letter had been signed by John Flynn, vice president of online digital and directing marketing for Buena Vista Home Entertainment. Disney owns that company.
The report said an unnamed employee stole an undisclosed number of credit card numbers along with private information about account holders. Thieves only require a little data to successfully perpetrate identity theft.
Unlike other firms that have suffered breaches and offered credit monitoring to potential victims of such theft, Disney hasn't offered Van Duser any such service. It could be Disney wants Alta Resources to take the responsibility for this, as law enforcement caught their employee in the sting operation.
