This next Patch Tuesday will be a big one - Microsoft plans to release six new fixes, four of which will address critical vulnerabilities. Five of the six patches relate to issues of remote code execution.

The security community is, as you might expect, not exactly thrilled to hear of all these problems. Many have noted Microsoft's own definition of a critical vulnerability - "[a] vulnerability whose exploitation could allow the propagation of an Internet worm without user action."
But Microsoft is getting a few nods for its transparency. "June marks the first month that Microsoft publishes its expanded advanced security warnings," writes Tom Sanders for iTnews.com.au.
"The Advance Notification Service is designed to allow IT administrators to prepare for upcoming patch releases," he continues. "The warnings are sent out on the Thursday before each patch release, [which] are scheduled for the second Tuesday of the month."
The Notification Service has, true to its intentions, provided more information about this particular round of patches; it looks like there's a pretty even spread between the pieces of software to which they will apply. Windows, Internet Explorer, Office, Outlook Express, Windows Mail, and Visio are all named as intended the recipients.
CNET's Dawn Kawamoto adds, "Ironically, Microsoft has touted Vista as its most secure version of Windows to date, but even last April the software giant had to issue an emergency update that fell out of its usual monthly patch cycle."
Hmmm. I suppose Microsoft's Notification Service is nice - it's good to hear about these things - but it looks as if the Redmond-based corporation would win more fans by simply cleaning up its act.
