Malicious hacking activity affecting websites in Australia has been originating mostly from Turkey over the past eight years.
A Tipping Point survey of 20,133 web defacements found that the majority of the most egregious hackers committing them were based in Turkey.
The Sydney Morning Herald cited Tipping Point's Ken Law, who identified a hacker going by Isokorpitx as being responsible for 841 defacements, more than anyone else they identified.
"When you see that a website's down, it means that they would have penetrated your perimeter defenses - it's just a symptom of a larger problem," Low said in the article.
Once these attacks make it past the front door, attackers can sometimes make inroads against the server. This would give them access to much more information, depending on the website in question.
A commerce site could be a treasure chest filled with personally identifiable information and credit card data. Both of those are heavily traded commodities in the black market for such data.
But public defacements of home pages tend to indicate a more political statement is being made. Criminals who crack sites for gain don't want to be noticed, as a general rule.
The attacks against Australian websites were not unique to the country, the report said. Similar defacements appeared on other sites throughout the world.
