The security site had been facing a distributed denial of service attack for several hours; the attack hit 1 Gb/second at its peak.
Someone out there isn't a fan of Paul Laudanski or CastleCops. The site hosts several security resources, including one of our favorites, the Phishing Incident Reporting and Termination (PIRT) Squad, aka Fried Phish.
The criminals behind phishing attacks must be getting worried. Last May, DDoS attacks against Blue Security forced it to shutdown completely. The company operated Blue Frog, an anti-spam software package that drew the wrath of spammers.
The Blue Security attack had been blamed on a Russian spammer known by the handle of PharmaMaster. He is believed to have numerous connections to criminal syndicates, which in turn had a lot of zombied bot machines available to launch a massive attack.
Laudanski said in an email that though the site is in a position to stay up, some of their services are not back online yet. They will also push back the deadline for their contest back one week to March 1st because of the attacks.
That contest celebrates the five years CastleCops have been around and battling phishers from around the world. Its feed of phishing information is followed by domestic and international organizations, including US-CERT.
Laudanski also noted that CastleCops is seeking sponsors for the site. We hope they are able to find some, as PIRT has become an invaluable resource for reporting phishing scams on the Internet.
