We'll give McDonald's the benefit of the doubt and call this a colossal blunder rather than a sinister plot. Not very good options are they? Details are sketchy so far, but apparently 10,000 lucky Japanese winners got a Trojan virus along with their new McMP3 Players.
I don't know if that was the name of it, but I'm going to McUse the m and the c as much as possible for this story. Just like what this McBlunder would allow to happen to its lucky benefactors, it's a McPhishing expedition.
Okay, I'll stop.
McDonald's ran a promotion in which customers could text a code on their Coke cups to be registered to win a McDonald's-branded mp3 player with 10 preloaded songs. Ronald McDonald was spotted smacking Grimace in an alley after hearing that those 10,000 mp3 players came with QQPass spyware Trojan preinstalled.
Once connected to a PC, the virus is spread, turning off antivirus applications, recording keystrokes, burrowing itself down inside the Registry.
McDonalds, according to the blogs reporting on the incident, didn't have much of an explanation for the event. The company apologized, in Japanese apologetic tradition, launched "a private inquiry" to look into it, and set up a 24-hour helpline to help customers recover from the McIncident.
