The antivirus technology developed by Sophos will be paired with Webroot's anti-spyware solutions and marketed as a combined solution in some of Webroot's product line.
Webroot's Spy Sweeper will have Sophos antivirus software alongside it as part of the consumer and enterprise product line Webroot plans to market later in 2006.
"Last month alone there were more than 4,000 new pieces of malware discovered, all aiming to attack unprotected PCs. For the first time, home users can benefit from the powerful industrial-strength virus protection that has been defending businesses and governments for 20 years," said Steve Munford, CEO of Sophos.
The Sophos software has been marketed as a business solution, where companies like Symantec and McAfee aim for both the enterprise and home markets with parts of their product lines.
Webroot has sold Spy Sweeper to the consumer market for some time, as well as the SMB and enterprise markets. On a standalone basis, Sophos or Webroot would have to be used in conjunction with another product to protect against viruses and malware.
Few can argue now that threats to PC users have been overstated. As we noted this morning, thousands of British PC users have had their personal data exposed to attackers striking from computers from the US.
Even though the conception has been that attacks like these tend to come from countries besides the United States. But according to TriCipher VP of Product Tim Renshaw, the bulk of such attacks do originate in the US.
Renshaw cited data from the Symantec September 2006 Security Report, which showed 37 percent of all attacks worldwide began in the US, followed by 10 percent from China and 6 percent from Germany. No other country accounted for more than 5 percent of attacks.
