A Swedish doctoral student thinks that educating users about computer security is a lost cause.
Stefan Gorling says that people don't select secure passwords, and they write them down as well as "give them out to strangers in exchange for treats".
I'm not sure exactly what "treats" he is referring to, but he does make some valid points. I wouldn't go so far to say, however, that educating users is pointless.
He spoke to a group of security professionals and asked "Might it be so that we use the term and concept of user education as a way to cover up our failure?"
"Is it not somewhat telling them to do our job? To make them be a part of the IT organization and do the things that we are bound to do as a specialized organization?" he added.
Again, Gorling makes an interesting point, but on the other hand, it can't hurt for users to know as much about keeping their computers secure as possible. Can they always be trusted to do so? No. Of course not, but the more protection the better right?
