Sophos announced new Application Control features today that aim to keep company data and networks safe by blocking unauthorized VoIP, P2P and IM applications.
These features are integrated into Sophos Anti-Virus version 6.
Concern has been high lately about the effects of these kinds of applications on corporate networks. In fact, results from a recent survey by Sophos itself showed great concern from system administrators over the apps.
"Clearly enterprises want to stop employees from running unauthorized programs that eat up bandwidth, violate security policies or result in data leakage. This is a problem that wants to be solved, and Sophos has a simple solution," says Sophos CEO Steve Munford.
"Our goal is to provide enterprises with a single management console and universal client for both security and general desktop management," he added.
Over 86% of those who participated in the survey said that they wanted to block VoIP appliations. Over 62% of them believed it to be essential.
"System administrators need a simple, flexible solution that not only ensures peace of mind, but guarantees the ability to develop and enforce policies that work for all parts of the enterprise," said IDC Security Products research manager Brian Burke.
He may have found what he's looking for with Sophos's new features.
Existing customers of Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000/XP/2003, version 6 will not be charged any extra money for the new features. The features are optional.
