New Internet Security Threat Report From Symantec

Symantec has released another Internet Security Threat Report, and the news isn't good. Attacks and vulnerabilities are up almost across the board, with one notable exception - the number of vulnerabilities discovered in the Opera Web Browser is down.
There was one other surprising development - there were considerably more vulnerabilities discovered in Firefox than in Internet Explorer (47 vs. 38). Internet Explorer is still a hacker favorite, though. It "was the most frequently targeted Web browser, accounting for 47% of all Web browser attacks," according to the report.
The U.S., as a whole, is also having a tough time. "The United States was the target of most DoS attacks, accounting for 54% of the worldwide total," the report stated. Americans may not be able to blame anyone else for their problems, though - "the United States ranked as the top country of attack origin, accounting for 37% of the worldwide total."
The report also gave an indication of how companies respond to their products' vulnerabilities. Microsoft did poorly in one area. "Internet Explorer had an average window of exposure of nine days, the largest of any Web browser. Apple Safari averaged five days, followed by Opera with two days and Mozilla with one day."
The Redmond-based company did well in another respect. "In the first half of 2006, Sun operating systems had the highest average patch development time, with 89 days, followed by Hewlett Packard with 53 days, Apple with 37 days and Microsoft and Red Hat with 13 days."
