Symantec and Adobe have made what one source called their first "official complaints" about Microsoft's plans to provide its own security for Vista. Adobe reportedly "told the European Commission that Microsoft should be barred from building into Vista competing software for reading and creating electronic documents."
Those quotes came from Nate Mook's article on the subject, which was posted in BetaNews. Mook also noted Symantec's objections to Microsoft's "fixed-layout document standard known as XPS" and its Patchguard feature. The article, which was posted yesterday afternoon, has already elicited 71 comments.
Reactions were surprisingly mixed, as opposed to the Microsoft-bashing that tends to erupt. Paul Skinner, referencing several other posts, wrote, "We all know that the inbuilt security will be crap, but it's still no place for Symantec (and Adobe separately) to butt in and demand it be removed."
A reader by the name of "rogueworld" thought somewhat differently, saying, "The average user does not want to have to download all the various security software etc. Windows Defender being built into Vista adds to the security of the OS."
"Murphmeister" took an aggressive approach. "These parasitic companies [Adobe and Symantec] have made billions off their applications on the Microsoft operating system," he (or she) wrote. "They are treading a fine line by biting the hand that feeds." Of course, it must be noted that Microsoft wasn't trying to use Windows security vulnerabilities to figuratively throw Symantec a bone.
"ghammer" proposed a "novel solution: Let Adobe and Symantec provide a better solution than the bundled capability. Users will flock to the better solution and pay for the privilege."
