Microsoft Attempts To Keep Vista Security Intact In EU

Another development has occurred in Microsoft's ongoing European legal battle.

Erich Andersen, Vice President and Associate General Counsel for Microsoft Europe, Middle East and Africa, asked that the company be allowed to release Vista intact; the European Commission may mandate the removal of some security features.

That possibility is only the latest in a series of clashes between the two entities.

The Commission recently fined Microsoft for failing to meet certain antitrust standards.

And "last week, Microsoft raised the possibility that it might delay the introduction in Europe because of the Commission's antitrust requirements," according to Reuters.

"The Commission said it was misleading to imply it could be the cause of delays," the article continued.

Andersen spoke to the press about the situation.

"We want to launch Windows Vista in a fully lawful manner and we want to avoid regulatory decisions that could increase security risks for European consumers," he said. "One of our principal concerns is that European consumers have access to the same new security features in Windows Vista as everyone else."

Andersen, who was publicly assigned to his current position only eleven days ago, would seem to already be comfortable speaking for the region, saying, "Security is a top concern for European consumers and we hope the Commission will not require removal of these important features in Europe."

A comment in the press release announcing Andersen's promotion hinted at the difficulties he inherited.

"Over the coming years I will work to take forward the constructive and creative relationship between Microsoft, its local partners and the region's policy makers . . ."

That carefully worded statement lacked the usual overabundance of optimism found in such documents.
