Sophos reports on a phishing campaign making the rounds out of Australia that claims to be from a modeling agency.
This pseudo-modeling agency says that it is accepting applications for models, agents, as well as actor positions. Needless to say, it is a scam aimed at stealing identities.
In fact, the fake agency actually stole it's own identity from a real business in Australia, though the email address in the from line is fake.
The emails ask potential victims to give up personal information as well as photos.
Sohpos Asia Pacific head of technology Paul Ducklin offers the following advice:
"Treat your personal data as valuable...and if you are a parent, teach your children the risks of handing out personal contact details over the internet on the say-so of an email."
"We have seen a number of recent convictions around the world involving young girls stalked and seduced by online pedophiles," adds Ducklin. "We have also seen a group of young Sydneysiders suborned into accepting electronic transfers into their bank accounts from cybercriminals, withdrawing this money in cash in return for a cut of the proceeds, and then being caught and charged themselves."
Models, actors, agents, and parents be warned.
